Virginia Intermont in Print, 1894 to 1963

How this sample was built

Glider Innovations built this public sample from Virginia Intermont College's own publications as they appear on the Internet Archive: the Annual of the Southwest Virginia Institute (1894 to 1897), Sense and Nonsense (1898 and 1899), the V.I. Pennant and the Pennant (1906 to 1911), the Annual of 1919-20, and the Intermont yearbook (1915 to 1963). Bristol Public Library scanned almost all of them, the Library of Virginia scanned the two volumes of Sense and Nonsense, and the Allen County Public Library scanned one copy of the 1907 Pennant. This site is not affiliated with any institution and nothing here comes from a college's own systems.

Fifty pages were chosen by hand and described from the page images. Sixty-three short passages were quoted from the scans and each was checked against the page image. Where a year had to be worked out from the volume or from a weekday, the note beside the passage says so. The name search covers the text of all 61 volumes as the scanner read it, so names in yearbook lists are sometimes misspelled there.

Which volumes are here. Everything published in 1930 or earlier is in the public domain in the United States and is included. Volumes from 1931 to 1963 are included only where the scanned front matter carries no copyright notice, or where a notice is printed and no renewal was found in the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database (checked Oct 30th, 2026). Nothing after 1963 is used. The 1923 Intermont is left out because its files could not be retrieved from the Internet Archive on Oct 30th, 2026, and a second scan of the 1946 Intermont is left out as a duplicate.

The college's names. The volumes themselves show the names in turn: Southwest Virginia Institute on the annuals of 1894 to 1899, Virginia Institute on the Pennant of 1906 to 1910, and Virginia Intermont College on the Annual of 1919-20 and the Intermont from 1920 on.

The college's closing. Virginia Intermont College announced its closure on May 20th, 2014, according to the Wikipedia article on the college, which cites the Roanoke Times story "Virginia Intermont closes after 130 years" of that date. An Associated Press report of May 9th, 2014 (WTOP) said the college was "in the process of ceasing operations in the wake of financial problems" and the "impending loss of its accreditation on July 1." Cardinal News reported on Dec 22nd, 2025 that the college "closed in 2014 after it lost its accreditation" and that a fire on Dec 20th, 2024 destroyed the four oldest buildings on the former campus. All three sources were read on Oct 30th, 2026.

A full Glider for a school would cover every volume it holds, with the school deciding what is public and what stays private, and could add alumni interviews, life paths, and photo galleries.
